I
would like to tell you about the fabulous weekend our "Stitch & Bitch"
group have just had at Murrumburrah near Harden in southern NSW.
We
did quite a bit of research into any possibilities not too far away
from Canberra. I rang and emailed almost every motel, hotel, function
centre, tourist information centre etc within a 2 1/2 hour drive of
Canberra and some were just so expensive, or just didn't bother to
reply but I had replies and quotes from about half a dozen venues
including two 19th century hotels which seemed to meet our
requirements. One was in Canowindra and the other in Murrumburrah.
We just wanted an area to sew - we didn't want workshops or anything
organised - we wanted all our meals provided from dinner on Friday to
lunch on Sunday. We wanted those who so desired to have their own
rooms and those who wanted to share could do so.
We decided on the
Commercial Hotel in Murrumburrah - partly because it was only a 90
minute drive from Canberra.
They had everything we wanted at a very reasonable price but the bonus
was that The Quilter's Stash patchwork shop was over the road. Sue,
the owner of the shop offered us the use of her workroom for the 2
days we were there for virtually no charge. She had a great table for
basting, cutting out etc and a design wall which we could use. So we
spent our days in her workshop which was perfect for the 11 of us and
the rest of the time we spent in the hotel. Sue was so helpful and we
all shared ideas and had a great time. Word quickly spread that we
were there and we were visited by many of the local quilters and patchworkers some of whom brought examples of their work to share with
us. Of course some of us spent money in Sue's shop but she has such a
great range that it would have been hard not to.
The
hotel was old - 1861 - with a lot of character and very rustic
furniture and most rooms had quilts on the beds. We did have to share
bathrooms but that wasn't a problem. |

One
of my main reasons for this post is to suggest checking out the
possible facilities of the country towns near you. You never know just
what you may find.
