district NSW
Harden Shire nestles amid the
'Hilltops' district, the undulating
hills of the Southwest Slopes region of New South Wales, 340 km SW of
Sydney and 125 km NW of Canberra by road. Harden Shire is home to
3,600 people, half living in the twin towns of Harden and Murrumburrah.
The villages of Galong, Jugiong and Wombat are worth a visit, while Cunningar, Kingsvale, Prunevale,
Nubba and Aurville have their own attractions.
Known for its scenery, events, sporting and recreational facilities and
historic attractions, Harden Shire is becoming known as a centre for
quality, fresh local produce: cherries, figs, peaches, apples,
strawberries and other fruit in season, eggs, olive oil, mustard seed oil,
wine and honey. Harden Shire grows more cherries than Young.
Fresh local lamb and beef, and wool and alpaca garments are sold.

get away and relax, to explore the region or to attend events in nearby
Binalong, Boorowa, Cootamundra, Cowra, Gundagai, Temora, Tumut, Wee
Jasper, Yass and Young. Harden is a part of the
Gold Trails.
With many beautiful old churches, Harden Shire is an

and food will not cost the earth.

19th and early 20th century buildings and village atmosphere, Murrumburrah
has many attractions for the visitor, including a quilt shop, gift shops,

The Federation Star, a 15m
tall stainless steel obelisk surmounted by a multi-faceted Federation
Star, was erected in Mill Park in 2001 to celebrate the centenary of
federation.
The impressive monument, illuminated at night, was designed
and built by Murrumburrah engineer Russell Muirhead of Muirhead
Engineering. Next to the Star is a stainless steel flagpole
erected in 2008 to honour Alf Round, a merchant seaman and former POW who retired to
Murrumburrah and tended the park until he passed away in 2006. The
park is the site of one of Murrumburrah's earliest hotels, the
Criterion, erected by Miles Murphy in 1860. |

GALONG CEMETERY
The Ryan family established a cemetery at Galong
near the pioneer former convict Ned Ryan's (1786-1871) homestead Galong House, now
part of St Clement's Retreat Centre.
The picturesque cemetery lies amid sheep and wheat
paddocks, surrounded by a stone wall with a
Scottish coping, a bequest from Ned's son John Nagle Ryan who became a
member of parliament.
The cemetery is notable for its
spectacular grave sculpture, many carved by
Frank Rusconi of Gundagai for the Ryan family and other pioneers.
A few km north of Galong village on
the western side of Galong Road, the cemetery was restored in 1999 and
is managed by a local committee, the Friends of Galong Cemetery. |
